Aristarkh Lentulov
/1882-1943/

Aristarkh Lentulov was a prominent artist associated with the avant-garde movement in the early 20th century. He began his artistic studies in Penza and Kyiv before honing his skills in the studio of Dmitry Kardovsky in Saint Petersburg. It was in Moscow, where he settled in 1909, that Lentulov played a vital role in founding the innovative Jack of Diamonds group.

In his quest for artistic exploration, Lentulov journeyed to Paris from 1910 to 1911. There, he studied under Henri Le Fauconnier and embraced the principles of Orphism, influenced by artists like Robert Delaunay. Lentulov absorbed the vibrant styles of the Fauvists and Cubists, forging his own distinctive and colorful approach to painting. His return to Russia in 1912 marked his significant influence on the emerging Russian futurist and Cubo-Futurist movements, inspiring figures such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich.

Notably, Lentulov co-founded a satirical art group called Today's Lubock with Vladimir Mayakovsky and Kazimir Malevich. Their works, drawing inspiration from Russian folklore and traditional lubok art, carried a strong anti-Austrian and anti-German sentiment.

Beyond his contributions to the visual arts, Lentulov engaged in theatrical endeavors, designing sets for plays at the Kamerny Theatre and creating visuals for a production of Scriabin's Prometheus at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1919.
