Charles Grandon
/1691-1762/
French painter Charles Grandon rose to prominence as a skilled genre and portrait artist. Born in Lyon, France, he followed in his father Jean Grandon's footsteps, receiving his earliest artistic training from him. Grandon's talent was recognized when he was appointed the official painter of Lyon in 1749. This prestigious position likely led to a notable commission in 1751: creating 91 oil portraits on parchment depicting local nobility, city officials, and merchants.
Grandon's influence extended beyond his paintings. He is remembered as an educator who counted the acclaimed Jean-Baptiste Greuze among his students. Interestingly, Grandon's artistic legacy continued within his family. His daughter, Jeanne-Marie, also pursued a career in art and married the composer André Grétry.
