Born in 1844 in Chuguyevka (now Ukraine), Repin studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg under Ivan Kramskoy. His famous work, "Barge Haulers on the Volga" (1870-1873), earned him international recognition for its realistic portrayal and social commentary.
Repin traveled extensively, immersing himself in Russian culture and capturing the country's diverse population. He also depicted significant events and figures from Russian history, such as the legendary "Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks" (1880-1891).
