Ivan Grabovsky was a landscape painter, marine painter, author of a number of genre paintings and satirical drawings. He worked in the grotesque style and was skilled in contour drawing. He is known for his satirical drawings in the magazines "Pulemet" (1905, cover with the famous drawing "His Majesty the All-Russian Proletariat"), "Niva", "Lukomorie", "Solntse Rossii" and others.

He was a student of Ilya Repin and Pavel Chistyakov at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1902-1909). He was awarded the title of artist for his painting "Snow Fell" in 1909. He was also a member and exhibitor of associations such as the "Society of Independent Artists", the "Society of Artists named after Arkhip Kuindzhi" and others. He participated in the International Exhibition in Venice.
