Nataliya Goncharova
/1881-1962/
Natalia Goncharova was a Russian artist known for her contributions to the Russian avant-garde movement in the first half of the 20th century. She began her artistic career as a sculpture student before transitioning to painting under the influence of her future husband, Mikhail Larionov. Her early success came from her use of impressionism in her pastels and watercolors, which caught the attention of art patrons.

Goncharova was an active participant in various art movements and exhibited her work both in Russia and abroad. She faced criticism for her first solo exhibition in Moscow in 1910 and subsequent exhibitions with the Russian avant-garde. Goncharova and Larionov left Russia in 1915 and spent several years performing with the Diaghilev's "Russian Seasons" in Europe. Although Goncharova experienced a period of obscurity following her death, she has since been recognized as a significant figure in Russian art history, with her works setting record prices at auctions.
