Nikolay Dubovskoy
/1859-1918/

Nikolay Dubovskoy, a Russian landscape painter and member of the Peredvizhniki movement.

Despite his father's wish for him to follow family tradition and attend the Cadet Corps of Vladimir, Dubovskoy pursued his passion for art after his instructors recognized his talent. He audited classes at the Imperial Academy of Arts, became a student of Mikhail Clodt, and exhibited regularly with the Peredvizhniki, eventually becoming a member in 1886. Dubovskoy travelled extensively from 1890 to 1900, was offered a professorship at the Imperial Academy of Arts, but refused. He became head of the landscape painting workshop in 1911 and hosted a Tuesday "Salon" attended by notable figures. After his death in 1918, he was largely forgotten during the Soviet era, except for one exhibition in 1938.
