Nikolay Khokhryakov
/1857-1928/
Nikolay Khokhryakov, a Russian painter, landscape artist, and interior designer, was born in 1857 in Vyatka to a modest middle-class family. His encounter with the Vasnetsov artists, Apollinary and Victor, who visited his hometown during the summers, proved to be a turning point in his life. With Apollinary Vasnetsov's patronage, Khokhryakov began studying drawing and etching under Ivan Shishkin in St. Petersburg from 1880 to 1882.
Under Shishkin's influence, Khokhryakov started incorporating photography into his works, utilizing it extensively during winter when outdoor sketches were not possible. By creatively manipulating the photographic images, borrowing composition and subject matter, Khokhryakov infused each piece with a mood that resonated with his inner world. In the early 1910s, the artist shifted his focus to painting interior views. During the later period of his career, from 1910 to 1920, Nikolay Nikolaevich Khokhryakov produced his finest interior canvases, showcasing the distinctiveness of his artistic nature and emphasizing his creative individuality.
