Petr Sokolov
/1821-1899/

Petr Sokolov, a talented watercolorist, was known for his captivating depictions of everyday life, soldiers, hunting scenes, and portraits. Although primarily self-taught, he briefly studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under the guidance of his uncle Karl Bryullov.

Sokolov's watercolors showcased his skillful technique, harmonious colors, and accurate portrayal of people and animals. While he rarely exhibited at general art exhibitions, he held a solo exhibition in St. Petersburg in 1887.

Notably, Sokolov served at the Russian army headquarters during the Russo-Turkish War and was honored with the St. George Cross for his bravery. In 1893, he received the prestigious title of academician from the Academy of Arts. His notable works include illustrations for Turgenev's "Notes of a Hunter," watercolor painting "Horse Fair" (housed in the Tretyakov Gallery), and the portrait of writer Sergey Terpigorev (displayed in the Alexander III Museum). Sokolov passed away in October 1899 due to a heart defect and was laid to rest at the Kazan City Cemetery.
