Born in St. Petersburg, he grew up in a privileged and artistic family. Polenov received his artistic training at the Imperial Academy of Arts and studied under Pavel Chistyakov from 1863 to 1871, while also pursuing studies in law at Saint Petersburg's Law University. He was honored with the Great Medal for his painting "The Resurrection of Jairus' Daughter."

Polenov's artistic vision centered around promoting happiness and joy through art, culture, and education. His paintings often focused on rural life and landscapes, portraying peasants working in fields, forests, and rivers with dignity and respect.
