Alexander Shenderov
/1897-1967/

Alexander Shenderov, born on October 28, 1897, in Rostov-on-Don, showcased his artistic talent fr om an early age. After completing his education at a classical gymnasium, he delved into anatomy and art history courses at the University and the Archaeological Institute. During this time, he also made a name for himself in city art exhibitions.

In 1921, Shenderov embarked on an artistic journey to Petrograd, wh ere he had the privilege of studying under Alexandre Benois, the esteemed director of the Hermitage Art Gallery. Under Benois' guidance, Shenderov delved into the works of old masters, shaping his artistic inclinations. Although he initially studied in Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin's workshop, he eventually found his artistic home in Alexander Gaush's art school, learning from the influential Mstislav Dobuzhinsky and solidifying his connection to the esteemed Leningrad School of Artists.

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Shenderov worked under the tutelage of Vladimir Lebedev and also taught at the Architectural faculty of the Leningrad Institute of Industrial Construction Engineers. In 1941, Shenderov selflessly volunteered for active duty in the army, serving as an orderly. Upon his return to Rostov in 1944, he faced artistic challenges and was unjustly expelled from the Rostov Union of Artists in 1946, accused of "formalism and aesthetics." Undeterred, he relocated to the Urals, sharing his knowledge as a drawing and painting teacher at the Ural Art and Industrial College of Nizhny Tagil. Eventually, in the mid-1950s, Shenderov's undeniable talent gained recognition, leading to his rehabilitation and the removal of administrative restrictions.

With renewed dedication, Shenderov returned to Leningrad, fully immersing himself in his creative pursuits. In 1975, a significant posthumous exhibition of his remarkable works took place in Leningrad at the esteemed halls of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists. The exhibition captivated audiences as it traveled to other cities, including Lviv, Baku, and Rostov-on-Don.
