/1870-1926/

Arkady Rylov was a highly esteemed landscape painter, graphic artist, and educator from Russia. He was affiliated with prominent art associations, including the "World of Art" and the "Union of Russian Artists," and played a pivotal role as a founding member of the Leningrad Union of Artists. Rylov held a prestigious professorship at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, part of the All-Russian Academy of Arts. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts, he was honored as a Meritorious Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1935.

Rylov's artistic legacy is primarily characterized by his celebrated landscapes, most notably the renowned works "Green Noise" and "In the Blue Expanse." These masterpieces exemplify his exceptional artistic prowess. Growing up during his parents' journey to Vyatka, Rylov's childhood was deeply influenced by the surrounding natural beauty, which became a constant wellspring of inspiration for his art.

Upon his arrival in St. Petersburg in 1888, Rylov pursued his artistic education at the Central School of Technical Drawing and the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, following the advice of relatives. Despite an unforeseen interruption due to military service, his unwavering passion for art led him back to St. Petersburg once his duty was fulfilled.

In 1893, Rylov's prodigious talent gained recognition when he was admitted to the esteemed Academy of Arts. The following year, he had the privilege of joining the workshop of Arkhip Kuindzhi, a revered landscape painter who had long served as a source of inspiration for Rylov. Under Kuindzhi's guidance, Rylov embraced a style characterized by direct observation of nature, combining romantic imagery, captivating lighting effects, and a decorative interpretation of color.

In addition to his artistic accomplishments, Rylov made significant contributions as an educator. As a professor at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, he played a pivotal role in nurturing and influencing the next generation of artists. Noteworthy masters in the genre of landscape painting, such as Alexey Gritsai, Boris Shcherbakov, and Nikolay Timkov, were among his students. Notably, Nikolay Galakhov, a highly regarded artist from Leningrad and St. Petersburg, regarded Rylov as his cherished mentor and favorite artist, underscoring the enduring impact of Rylov's teachings and inspiration in the post-war artistic landscape.
