Boris Kustodiev is a renowned portrait painter known for his depictions of traditional Russian life and colorful folk characters such as beauties, merchants, and merchants' wives. He gained recognition and support from influential figures like Ilya Repin and received acclaim from Fyodor Chaliapin. Despite his exceptional talent, Kustodiev lived a difficult life, struggling financially. He used his first earnings to buy himself a pair of pants. Unfortunately, he faced tragedy with the loss of his youngest son and later found himself wheelchair-bound at the age of 38. Enduring two revolutions and a Civil War, Kustodiev's spirit remained unbroken. In every painting or illustration he created, one can find a sense of immense happiness and joy.
