Pavel Dzhogin
/1834-1885/
Pavel Dzhogin was a landscape painter born in the Starodubsky district of Chernihiv province. He showed early signs of talent at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied alongside other accomplished artists such as Shishkin, Gine, and Jacobi. Despite receiving recognition for his work with small and large silver medals, Dzhogin's artistic career did not live up to the expectations placed on him due to his weak character and challenging life circumstances. In his final years, he worked exclusively for shops and the art market, often painting without sketches and struggling to capture the essence of nature. Despite these difficulties, his paintings occasionally revealed glimpses of his talent. Dzhogin died of throat cancer in 1885, impoverished and forgotten.
During his time at the Academy, Dzhogin produced landscapes and sketches of different locations in St. Petersburg, Novgorod, and Chernihiv provinces. His artistic activity declined in later years, and his paintings from 1860 to 1876 represented the bulk of his work.
